Coimbatore Flyover Opening Time and History: A New Era for City Traffic

Introduction

The wait is finally over for Coimbatore residents. The GD Naidu Elevated Expressway or the Avinashi Road Flyover is expected to be opened on October 9, 2025. The project will be inaugurated by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, which will be a significant milestone in the transport infrastructure development of Coimbatore. Although the opening time has not officially been declared, the ceremony should occur in the morning, after which people will be allowed to access the building later on in the day.

About the Flyover

Spanning 10.1 kilometers, this is Tamil Nadu’s longest flyover, connecting the Coimbatore Airport junction to the Nanjappa Road junction. The flyover is designed to decongest Avinashi Road, one of the city’s busiest routes linking commercial, IT, and industrial hubs.

Key features include:

  • Four-lane structure for smooth vehicle movement
  • Modern lighting and drainage systems
  • Eight entry and exit ramps in both directions
  • Enhanced connectivity between Peelamedu, Hope College, Lakshmi Mills, and Gandhipuram

History of the Project

In August 2020, it was approved as a project of the Tamil Nadu Highways Department at an approximate cost of 1791 crore. It was started to be constructed in December 2020.

Despite a number of difficulties such as land acquisition, clearances of railways, and relocation of utility lines, the project proceeded steadily. The flyover is eventually complete and can now accommodate thousands of commuters per day.

Significance of the Flyover

Named after the visionary industrialist G.D. Naidu, the flyover is a tribute to Coimbatore’s spirit of innovation and development. It’s expected to:

  • Reduce travel time significantly along Avinashi Road
  • Improve traffic flow and reduce congestion
  • Support the city’s growing economy and infrastructure demands

Conclusion

The Coimbatore Avinashi Road Flyover is more than just a road project — it’s a symbol of progress, efficiency, and modernization. As it opens on October 9, 2025, it promises to transform commuting across the city and mark the beginning of a new era in Coimbatore’s transport history.
