The museum was established in 1902 by Horace Archibald Gass, who was the Conservator of Forests at the time. At its inauguration, it was known as the Forest Museum at Coimbatore and was later named after him in 1905.
The present building was completed in 1915 and features British Gothic-style architecture, with red stone and imported iron pillars. Its historic architecture adds to the unique character of the museum.
