Introduction
Wayanad sits high in the Western Ghats, so the air is cooler and the landscape is much greener than what you leave behind in Coimbatore. It's known for its tribal heritage, hill-country food, and a slower pace than the bigger tourist towns. If you enjoy the hills around the city, our guide to the Western Ghats near Coimbatore shows how far this mountain range stretches.
It works as a long day trip, but a weekend stay (2 nights) suits it much better, because the drive itself takes most of a day. Looking for shorter escapes first? See our list of weekend getaways from Coimbatore.
What this guide covers: distance and the best routes from Coimbatore, travel time by car, two-wheeler, bus and train, toll gates, checkposts and entry rules, places to visit, a sample 2-night plan, and safety tips.
How far is Wayanad from Coimbatore?
The distance changes with your route and destination. All figures below are approximate, and your GPS may show slightly different numbers depending on your starting point in Coimbatore.
Approximate distance breakdown (Route 1, via Ooty)
Coimbatore to Mettupalayam: about 35 km. Mettupalayam to Ooty: about 50 km, the ghat climb. Ooty to Gudalur: about 50 km. Gudalur to Sulthan Bathery: about 45 km. Sulthan Bathery to Kalpetta: about 25 km.
Best routes from Coimbatore to Wayanad
There are two main routes. Both start in Coimbatore and end in Wayanad, and they differ in scenery, distance and the part of Wayanad they suit best.
Route 1: Via Ooty and Gudalur (shorter and scenic)
You climb the Nilgiris first, then descend into Kerala past Gudalur. The road passes tea estates and viewpoints, and the change in temperature as you gain altitude is noticeable. The Mettupalayam to Ooty ghat has hairpin bends, and the stretch after Gudalur passes through forest where wildlife can cross the road.
- Distance: about 185 to 215 km, depending on your stop in Wayanad
- Travel hours: roughly 5 to 6.5 hours
- Best for: Sulthan Bathery, Tholpetty and northern Wayanad
- Highlight: you can break the trip at Coonoor or Ooty
Route 2: Via Palakkad and Kozhikode (longer)
This route stays on the plains for longer and avoids the Nilgiris. It also crosses the famous mountain break of the Palakkad Gap. The final climb is the Thamarassery ghat, known for its 9 hairpin bends, with viewpoints along the way. Many drivers find the earlier part easier than the Ooty ghat, though the road is busier.
- Distance: about 250 to 260 km to Kalpetta
- Travel hours: roughly 6 to 7 hours
- Best for: Kalpetta, Vythiri, Lakkidi and southern Wayanad
The two routes side by side
| Factor | Route 1: Ooty and Gudalur | Route 2: Palakkad and Kozhikode |
|---|---|---|

| Drive time | 5–6.5 hrs | 6–7 hrs |
| Terrain | Nilgiri ghat, then forest stretch after Gudalur | Long plains section, then the Thamarassery ghat |
| Best for | Sulthan Bathery, Tholpetty, northern Wayanad | Kalpetta, Vythiri, Lakkidi, southern Wayanad |
| Entry rules | Nilgiris e-pass, border checkpost | FASTag toll plazas on highway sections |
| Watch out for | Ooty holiday traffic, wildlife after dark | Busy highway traffic, wet ghat bends |
Travel by vehicle: distance and time
Times below are realistic estimates including the slower ghat sections, but not long sightseeing stops.
By car
- Distance: about 185 to 215 km via Ooty, or 250 to 260 km via Palakkad and Kozhikode
- Travel time: about 5 to 6.5 hours via Ooty, and 6 to 7 hours via Palakkad and Kozhikode
- Fuel: fill up at Mettupalayam before the ghat climb
- Best for: families and groups who want flexibility to stop at viewpoints
- Driving: expect hairpin bends on the Mettupalayam to Ooty stretch, and a second winding section after Gudalur
- Going downhill: use lower gears instead of riding the brakes, and check brake health before you start
- Hiring a cab: ask upfront whether tolls, state entry taxes, parking and driver allowance are included in the quote. You can compare drop taxi services, hire a self-drive car, or book an acting driver for the ghat sections. Browse more cab drivers in Coimbatore too.
- Motion sickness: the winding roads can be hard on some passengers, so seat them in front and avoid heavy meals before the climb
By two-wheeler
- Distance: same as the car routes
- Travel time: about 6.5 to 8 hours via Ooty, including rest stops
- Weather: the Nilgiris section is cold and misty, so carry rain gear and a warm layer
- Timing: avoid riding the forest stretches after dark, when elephants and other wildlife are active
- Before you go: check brakes, tyres and lights, since the route has long descents and wet patches
- Pace: plan a break at least every hour or two, because ghat riding is tiring
- Safety gear: wear a proper helmet and carry a basic puncture kit
By bus
- Distance: same as the road routes
- Travel time: about 7 to 9 hours, often with a change at Ooty or Gudalur
- Typical pattern: Coimbatore to Ooty, then onward to Gudalur and Sulthan Bathery or Kalpetta
- Note: direct services are limited, so check current KSRTC, TNSTC and private bus schedules
- Budget option: it is usually the cheapest way to travel
- Comfort tip: take a window seat and eat lightly beforehand, since the ghat roads are winding
- Weekends and holidays: book early or expect crowded buses, especially on the Ooty leg
By train
- Journey: train from Coimbatore to Kozhikode (Calicut), then road to Kalpetta
- Road transfer: about 70 to 75 km from Kozhikode to Kalpetta, by bus or taxi
- Total time: roughly 7 to 8.5 hours including the transfer
- Best for: travellers heading to Kalpetta or the Vythiri side
- Booking: book train tickets on IRCTC in advance and check current train timings. Our Coimbatore Railway Station guide covers the station and how to reach it.
- Onward travel: confirm bus or taxi options at Kozhikode before you arrive, especially for late arrivals
Comparing the four ways to go
| Mode | Typical time | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Car | 5–7 hrs | Families, groups, flexible stops | Ghat bends, e-pass and entry rules |
| Two-wheeler | 6.5–8 hrs | Experienced riders, scenic rides | Cold, mist, wildlife after dark |
| Bus | 7–9 hrs | Budget travel | Limited direct services, crowds on holidays |
| Train + road | 7–8.5 hrs | Kalpetta and Vythiri stays | Road transfer from Kozhikode, late arrivals |
Can you take a train or flight?
Wayanad has no railway station, so there is no direct train from Coimbatore. The practical option is a train to Kozhikode, then a bus or taxi up the Thamarassery ghat to Kalpetta.
Toll gates, checkposts and entry rules
Via Ooty and Gudalur
- ✓The Nilgiris has needed an e-pass for visiting vehicles in recent years. Check the current rules and register before you travel.
- ✓There is a Tamil Nadu–Kerala border checkpost past Gudalur where papers can be checked.
- ✓Vehicles registered outside Kerala may owe Kerala entry tax or permit fees, especially hired taxis and vans. Private cars are usually treated differently from commercial vehicles.
- ✓Major toll plazas on the Mettupalayam, Ooty and Gudalur stretch are few, but confirm current toll points before you travel.
Via Palakkad and Kozhikode
- ✓This route uses national highway sections with FASTag toll plazas, and you may pass more than one.
- ✓Keep a funded, working FASTag to avoid extra charges.
Documents to carry
- ✓Driving licence and ID proof
- ✓RC, insurance and pollution certificate for your vehicle
- ✓A printout or screenshot of your e-pass, if applicable
